Ranks In The Nigerian Navy & How Much They Earn
The marine defense is part of the Nigerian Military Division and its superiors oversee their affairs. These officers are categorized in terms of years of service and other qualifications.
Each of these superiors has a special role to play in the naval service.
Nigerian naval staff is divided into 2 groups. There are commissioned and non-commissioned staff. Each of these divisions is headed by a leader.
Whereas commissioned officers are headed by the Admiral; NCOs are headed by a chief warrant officer. Consequently, salaries for Nigerian navies vary with both specifications.
Several Ranks in the Nigerian Marine
These are the various levels in the Nigerian marine defense and their monthly earning. They are ranked according to their hierarchy starting from the leaders at the top to the bottom.
- Admiral of the fleet: is the most senior naval officer. It’s very hard for anybody to reach that position. The admiral of the fleet is like a Field Marshal and Air Force Marshal. Presently in Nigeria, no one has attained the position of fleet admiral in the Nigerian marine defense. As such, a compensation scheme is not provided for this position.
- Admiral: is inferior to that of fleet admiral. The Admiral is currently the highest-ranking office and is well considered to be the flag bearer for the Nigerian Navy. Any officer may attain this naval position. An admiral receives base pay of ₦1,113,602 per month and ₦16,303,140 per year.
- Vice Admiral: A vice-admiral is also referred to as a three-star officer. This rank is similar to that of Lieutenant-General of the Army and Air Marshal. The Vice-Admiral receives basic pay of ₦1,113,602 and ₦13,363,229 per month per year.
- Rear Admiral: is inferior to the rank above. These ranking officers are also known as 2-star officers. A rear-admiral is at the same level as the major-general of the army and vice-marshal of the air force. A rear-admiral receives a base compensation of ₦1,003,245 while receiving ₦12,038,945 per year.
- Commodore: is the next position under the Rear Admiral in the Marine. This group of officers commands a squadron of ships. A Commodore is on the same rank as a Brigadier, likewise a commodore in the aviation. The monthly salary for a commodore is approximately ₦615,488 and collects ₦7,385,856 annually.
- Captain: Their level is inferior to that of the commodore. Once a staff attains this position, he automatically becomes responsible for vessels at sea. They oversee the safety of ships and their operations and assume other management responsibilities. The rank of captain is the same as that of a colonel in the army and a group captain in Aviation. A captain collects a base compensation of₦ 309,665 and ₦3,380,086 per year.
- Commander:s directs the ship’s operations and gives the command to officers who report to him. The position of commander in the Nigerian Navy is the same as a lieutenant-colonel in the army and a squadron commander in Aviation. A commander of the Nigerian navy received a salary of ₦281,674 within a month and received ₦3,380,086 within a year.
- Lieutenant commander: is in charge of setting up the warship. They have the same position as the army commander and a squadron commander in aviation. Any officer in this level of lieutenant-commander is paid about ₦230,652 a month and ₦2,767,824 a year.
- Lieutenant: is among the junior staff of the Nigerian Navy. The position is the same with a Flight Lieutenant in air aviation. A Lieutenant earns ₦ 195,685 in a month and a total of ₦ 2,348,220 in a year.
- Sub-lieutenant: It is one of the lowest levels among naval officials in Nigeria. People of position are the same as an aviation officer and a lieutenant commander in the Nigerian army. A second lieutenant is paid ₦150,625 a month, for a total of ₦1,807,500 a year.
- Acting Sub-lieutenant: is above a midshipman. They receive the sum of ₦130,852 in a month as compensation.
- Mid-Shipman: is the smallest Nigerian naval officer. This staff is more like students in the academy because they are still being trained to become full officers in the marine defense. So their pay is approximately ₦118,835 monthly and the total sum of ₦1,426,020 in one year.
Non Commissioned Officers

- Warrant Chief Petty Officer: is the highest level of non-commissioned staff of the Nigerian Navy. Anybody in that rank gets ₦120,853 as a monthly wage.
- Chief Petty Officer: is the next position in the defense marine after the position mentioned above. A Naval staff of this level is paid a monthly payment of ₦90,825.
- Petty Officer: are inferior to the previous level above. They receive a monthly pay of ₦80,852.
- Leading Rating: is inferior to the rank of Petty Officer. Anyone in this rank will go home with ₦ 70,855 as monthly pay.
- Able Rating: When we talk about NCOs in the navy, that rank is lower than a commanding officer. An Able Rating grade receives ₦50,855 in monthly income.
- Ordinary Rating: The rank of an Ordinary is lower than an able rating. Their job is to conduct cleaning operations on the ship. Anyone in that rank receives ₦45,854 as the payment for the month.
- Trainee: It is the lowest rank in the entire Nigerian navy and the least level among non-commissioned members of the navy. There is no salary for a Trainee; as such they are seen as volunteers.
