Are There Schools That Offer Petrochemical Engineering in Nigeria?

Do you have an interest in studying petro-chemical systemization at any of the Nigerian institutes? If you do, this post is specially designed for you.

In this article, we will describe some Nigerian institutes that offer this specific engineering course in the country, as well as the requirements for each institute.

Please take your seat and enjoy your time with us.

Petrochemical Engineering Schools In Nigeria

Oh yes, we have some Nigerian institutes that offer petro-chemical systemization as well as other engineering courses. The issue here is that universities that offer petro-chemical systemization aren’t much.

Therefore, there is high competition for the admission of students.

However, if you have all the requirements which qualify you to apply for the course, you can be fortunate to be admitted.

About Petro-chemical Engineering

It’s an aspect of chemical systemization that deals with crude oil refining through modern technology.

More or less of the courses you will come across in the cause of studying petro-chemical engineering include Reaction of Engineering, Mass of Transfer, Heat Transfer, Thermodynamics, Fluid Dynamics, transport phenomena, Modeling and Simulation, Refinery Operations and so forth.

Universities Who Offer Petrochemical Engineering in Nigeria

Unfortunately, we only have two Nigerian institutes that offer petro-chemical systemization in Nigeria. These universities are located in the southernmost part of the country.

  • Rivers State University of Science and Technology

This prestigious university is situated in the state of Rivers, an area in the southern region of Nigeria. It is one of the best institutes in Nigeria which offers petrochemical engineering.

Most of the graduates of this institution come out with excellent performance and are highly competent in the oil industry.

In addition to petro-chemicals, there are also some engineering courses.

Among them are civil engineering, marine engineering, agricultural and environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, and computer engineering.

All of the courses we’ve just mentioned are under the faculty of engineering.

Petrochemical engineering at Rivers State University of Science and Technology is a five-year course, with nothing under 10 semesters to complete the program.

Before you apply to study petrochemical engineering at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology, you will necessitate having a minimum of five credits in all science-related subjects like mathematics, chemistry, physics, and English language in your O’ level result.

Note that all five credits must be obtained in one sitting.

After that, you must have a score of not less than 180. Until you meet these requirements, you are not legible to apply for petro-chemical systemization at the aforementioned institution.

Furthermore, the tuition fee of this institution for the indigenes of the region is about ₦80000. While non-aboriginal people, have to pay ₦120,000 for the first year.

But for returning aboriginal students, they must pay ₦60,000, while returning non-aboriginal students must pay ₦110,000.

  • Niger Delta University

Niger Delta University was first established in 2002. The institution is characterized by three campuses, with well-equipped amphitheaters, labs, and research libraries.

No wonder the school is performing well.

Even though there are only two institutes that offer petro-chemical systemization in the country, most people prefer to opt for this institution over the other one.

It is known for producing graduates of good repute and highly qualified, who have a great impact in the oil industry. I guess that’s what attracts people’s attention to choose this institution.

Petrochemical systemization is a five-year course with approximately ten semesters to complete your program at the Niger Delta University.

During your 5 years, you will take theoretical and industrial training. Every session consists of two semesters, though along the line you will go for the industrial attachments we just mentioned.

Other engineering courses are proposed at the University of the Niger Delta.

Some of these courses include Mechanical engineering, Civil engineering, Electrical, electronic engineering, Chemical engineering, Marine engineering, Petroleum engineering, and agricultural and Environmental Engineering.

All of these courses are also administered by the Faculty of Engineering.

To qualify to study petro-chemical systemization with an O’ level certificate, you must have at least five credits in science-related courses.

All these credit scores should be obtained in a single session, which means that you will present only one Level O’ result.

Secondly, you will need to score a minimum of 160 points in your Ham before you can be taken into consideration for any admission.

As for tuition, it will cost you on average between ₦100,000 and ₦200,000 per session. At least that cost will give you an idea of how much you can spend to attend that university.

These are the two institutes in Nigeria that offer petro-chemical systemization. Other technology institutions and conventional universities offer other engineering courses like the ones we just mentioned earlier.

Both institutes offer undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programs.

Petrochemical Engineering Career Opportunities

We will briefly examine several career opportunities in the petro-chemical systemization sector. This will assist you in your decision-making, as to what your future may look like in this area of expertise.

Let’s check them out.

  • Petrochemical engineers may specialize in economics to adequately analyze the economic health of the petroleum industry.
  • Petrochemical engineers may venture into drilling, design, and oversight of natural gas operations in the field. They can also work with a geologist.
  • Graduates of petro-chemical systemization can venture into the development of equipment that will be used to optimize natural gas.
  • They can also be better managers, businessmen, seismologists, and environmental safety experts in the natural gas industry.
  • Petrochemical engineers may become teachers or consultants in their field of expertise and may also work in banks and other financial institutions.

Given that there are only two universities in Nigeria that offer petrochemical engineering right now, there is a high completion rate for student admission, as we mentioned earlier.

But if you haven’t been admitted to one of those institutions, then studying overseas will be the only option, if you have to study petrochemical engineering.
